FAQs: Glyphosate

How much glyphosate is used worldwide?

Glyphosate is the most used herbicide in human history[1]:

  • 3.5 Billion pounds (1.6 Billion Kilograms) sprayed across America since 1974
  • 18.9 Billion pounds (8.6 Billion Kilograms) sprayed worldwide since 1974
  • Glyphosate use has increased 15-fold since genetically modified crops were introduced in 1996

Where has glyphosate been found?

  • Popular Food Products[2]
  • Rain Water, Ground Water and Air[3]
  • Great Barrier Reef[4]
  • Human urine including children’s urine[5]

Who is correct?

  • The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC)[6]: Glyphosate = probable human carcinogen
  • German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR)[7]: Glyphosate = unlikely to pose a carcinogenic hazard to humans
  • U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)[8]: New evaluation still pending

Why do we need a comprehensive study on glyphosate and glyphosate-based herbicides?

To help guide the public and regulators we all now need the first ever comprehensive study on glyphosate and glyphosate-based herbicides.

Glyphosate has never been comprehensively studied to find out:

  • What levels of glyphosate are safe or not – including levels the public is exposed to
  • What specific harm is being caused to human health – if any
